About TED

What is TEDx?
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDx Dar,  where  x=independently organized TED event. At our TEDxDar event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

Paul Bomani
From early on Paul Bomani (22) has been interested in the state of the common man and development within Tanzania. Paul has increasingly been drawn to issues of infrastructure, city planning, education and governance as they relate to both the rural and urban settings.  While still trying to formulate a method of approach, Paul ultimately believes that true strides towards development will only be realized through emic approaches.

Paul was born and raised in Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania, and is currently pursuing a BS in Civil Engineering, and a Minor in Economics at Drexel University, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Paul has recently gained substantive cooperative work experience in engineering firms, with a heavy dose of work related to storm water management. Through this experience, Paul envisions innovative applications of water resource engineering in rural community development through irrigation, clean water supply, and small scale power generation.

By mentorship of his primary educator Mrs. Huxtable, Paul was one of the founders of his high school weekly paper, for which he was editor in chief, and has since remained a keen celebrator of the arts as they pertain to education and self preservation.  With that said, Paul believes that through the creative process of curiosity, we will ask questions that matter.

Kathleen Bomani
Within the diverse intellectual palette that is Kathleen Bomani (24), lays first and foremost her commitment and love for her country, Tanzania. She has displayed this through her steadfast dedication to the promotion of justice, equality, and development within Tanzania. From an early age, it was apparent that Kathleen is not only a critical thinker, but has a natural ability to connect with people. She built upon this skill when she attended Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she pursued a BA in Corporate Communications (Public Relations).

While at Drexel, Kathleen was instrumental in bringing an innovative and sustainable technology project, Lathes for Africa, to Arusha, Tanzania. A wood-turning lathe; a simple machine that is created from scrap material and used to cut and shape wood. The wood-turning lathes provides citizens with a manufacturing technology that enables them to sell goods from renewable energy sources and local materials. Kathleen served as the project’s cultural advisor, local liaison and translated an instruction manual on building the lathes from English to Kiswahili. Since then, her achievements have come in a variety of channels, including her recent work in the 2008 US elections at CBS Radio Philadelphia, where as a political radio sales specialist, she oversaw a $35 Million advertising account for the Obama-Biden Presidential campaign.

Kathleen’s interests lie in music – enthusiastically pursuing becoming a full-fledge DJ, Africana Studies, Photography, Pop Art, and the emerging Fashion Industry in Africa –  Though she is undoubtedly a woman of many talents, ultimately, she is eagerly engaged with the arts renaissance that is sweeping through the African continent. Currently Kathleen is the North America Fashion Publicist for Loin Cloth and Ashes by Anisa Mpungwe, A groundbreaking Tanzanian designer based in South Africa whose work was recently featured at industry revered, The Mercedes Benz New York Fashion week Fall 2010.

Kathleen’s dynamic personality inevitably results in her being called upon to be involved in various projects to advance creative thinking as well as bringing Tanzania to the forefront of both political and creative thought, as is evident in her current undertaking as curator of TEDxDar.

Nadeem Juma - TedxDar Event Host
An entrepreneur dedicated to economic and social development, Nadeem Juma(26) was born in Canada to Tanzanian parents and moved to Tanzania while in high school, where he completed his secondary education.  Nadeem has a background in business studies from York University, South Bank University and Kent University.  While in university, he developed a keen interest for issues related to youth and private sector involvement in Africa's development.  Understanding that education is imperative in equipping youth with the necessary tools to affect change and develop societies, Nadeem returned to Tanzania where he founded Dar es Salaam International Academy.

His particular passion for integrating youth and private enterprise as catalysts for development began to materialize in various ways.  In 2006, Nadeem joined E-Fulusi Africa. E-Fulusi was in its inception phase and was discussing how mobile phones could be used to provide financial services.  Nadeem's experience in startups and understanding of the continent allowed for the development of a young Research & Development company that used innovative models and technology to provide solutions to Tanzanians; an M-Banking service to be launched in Tanzania that allows the greatly un-banked society to operate bank accounts and engage in financial transactions and other services.  E-Fulusi is the first company in Tanzania to not only have an Application Service Licenses for M-Banking from Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), but also a letter of No-Objection from the Bank of Tanzania who provides oversight to the system.  From 2006 to 2008, Nadeem represented E-Fulusi at various fairs and trade shows such as Card Expo and ITU World Conference.  He has also been involved in establishing one of the first digital marketing companies in Tanzania, with two sites live to date.

Nadeem strongly believes that entrepreneurs and the private sector can play a significant role in developing Tanzania through harnessing skills in communication, management, administration, and other areas that are often needed to build relationships with government institutions.  Currently, he is the chairman of AIM Group.  Nadeem has volunteered at Ocean Road Cancer Hospital through the Pediatric Ward Weekly Community Service and has organized a house building project in Korogwe for Habitat for Humanity.
